Vanitas (72x48 in) * Explanation below.

Vanitas art is an intriguing and macabre genre which features objects rich in morbid symbolism in order to produce in the viewer's mind an acute awareness of the brevity of life and the inevitability of death.  This movement has been around for centuries w/various artists painting skeletons, dead flowers, decaying meat, skulls, etc., which are then overtly or covertly placed in the paintings.

I am reminded of one of my favorite passages by the great poet Robert Herrick:

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
  Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
  To-morrow will be dying.

In this painting (possibly a self portrait), the face and body are stripped of all outer coverings to reveal inner space.  The eyes are as galaxies floating in the vastness of outer space.

What we see on the outside of any person, situation or entity, is but counterfeit of the spiritual counterpart.  The peeling away of the onion is a good metaphor for the peeling/stripping away of the outer layers of all that we present to the world and ourselves as that which supposedly purports to represent the totality of our being, when just the opposite is the case, more often than not.

Look closely at the silk tie (and other hidden clues/symbols), as these are part of the message as well.

apotheosis; plural noun: apotheoses
  1. the highest point in the development of something; culmination or climax. "his appearance as Hamlet was the apotheosis of his career" the elevation of someone to divine status; deification.

  2. Are we not all struggling, in one manner or another, to seek and find and to be in tune with the Principle of our higher selves, whether we know this or not?
